Howden American Fan Company was founded in July 1969, for the initial purpose of furnishing cast aluminum blowers to the United States OEM Marketplace. In 1979, American Fan Co. moved to the current location on Symmes Road in Fairfield, Ohio.

In 1986, Woods Air Movement of Colchester, UK acquired American Fan Co. By 1987 American Fan Co. was producing the Woods line of Axial Fans for the US market. The company’s facilities grew again and soon included an airflow laboratory and a second manufacturing facility.

In 2002, Woods merged with a Swedish fan company, Flakt to create one of the largest fan company’s in the world – Flakt Woods. American Fan Co. was an integral part of the success and growth of Flakt Woods until 2013 when it was sold to Howden.
